In the midst of yet another Ebola outbreak, a familiar narrative unfolds, one that centers around the plight of a Western aid worker who contracts the disease. While the suffering of this individual is undoubtedly significant, it's a story that has been told before, and it often overshadows the countless African healthcare workers who tirelessly battle this deadly virus on the front lines.
As an infectious diseases physician with extensive experience in outbreak response, I've witnessed firsthand the immense sacrifices made by these unsung heroes. Their dedication knows no bounds, as they work tirelessly in overburdened hospitals, often with limited resources and at great personal risk. Yet, their stories remain largely untold, their struggles invisible beyond the communities they serve.
My own journey with Ebola began in Sierra Leone, where I spent months caring for patients during the largest outbreak on record. I witnessed the unimaginable suffering of those infected, the fear and isolation they endured. And then, upon my return home, I became a suspected patient myself. It was then that I truly understood the weight of what my patients had faced.
Among my most cherished possessions is a lapa, a wraparound skirt adorned with the handprints of survivors from our Ebola Treatment Unit. It serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and humanity I encountered during that time. But it also highlights a stark contrast: the resources and attention lavished upon me as a suspected case, compared to the basic care often lacking for my patients in West Africa.
The trauma I experienced was not solely from witnessing the devastation of Ebola in Sierra Leone. It was also from the isolation and fear I faced upon my return, the sudden shift in how I was perceived. And I realized that this trauma was shared by many African healthcare workers, whose stories often go untold.
During outbreaks, we praise healthcare workers as heroes, but we fail to recognize the psychological toll of their work. We celebrate their sacrifice, but we abandon them emotionally once the crisis fades from the headlines. We fixate on the suffering of those closer to home, ignoring the lives and stories of those in far-flung places.
The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo serves as a stark reminder of the need for change. We must value all lives equally, regardless of nationality or proximity. We must invest in and protect the frontline healthcare workers who stand between Ebola and the rest of the world. Their work is not expendable, and their stories deserve to be heard.
Behind every person in PPE is a human being with a story, carrying the weight of their experiences. And it is our collective responsibility to ensure that their sacrifices are not in vain, and that they are supported long after the outbreaks have ended.
